Strategic partnership between DEEC of NOVA FCT and SYNOPSYS

06-03-2025

Nowadays, there is a growing disparity between the skilled professionals the semiconductor industry needs and the number of individuals prepared to meet this challenge. Experts predict that by 2030, the global semiconductor industry will need over one million qualified workers, an average of more than 100,000 new professionals each year, driven by an estimated growth of over 80% in the sector. To support and sustain this growth, it is crucial to create new opportunities and invest in specialized engineering training. Despite the decline in enrollment in Engineering programs focused on semiconductors, the development of human resources in the area of integrated circuits remains essential. In response to this challenge, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) at NOVA FCT has established a strategic partnership with SYNOPSYS, with the goal of inspiring and empowering a new generation of Integrated Circuit (IC) designers who will drive the future of technology. SYNOPSYS welcomed 14 students from DEEC at NOVA FCT for an 8-month period, during which the students will work on their Master's theses in Integrated Circuit Design, significantly contributing to the training of engineers specialized in the semiconductor field in Portugal. These partnerships between companies and universities are essential to shaping and preparing the next generation of highly qualified engineers.
